Secrets & Easter Eggs
Every frame is doing something. Half of it will ruin you on rewatch. Here is what fans have found so far. Spotted something nobody else has? Post it in Discord. We put your name on it forever.
Character Secrets
Things these characters do when they think nobody is watching. Somebody is always watching. Usually Gerald.
Shadow's Teleportation
Watch Shadow the cat across any scene. You will never see her walk from one place to another. One frame: she is on the couch. Next frame: top of the fridge. The window was closed. The door was closed. The family stopped trying to explain it. She came from a reality rendered in gothic stop-motion and brought the jerky between-frame movement home with her. She could probably save the world. She is napping.
Gerald's Surveillance
Gerald Pryor's house is directly adjacent to the Marvin garage. In every exterior shot, look for Gerald — he is always watching. Peering through blinds. Adjusting a garden gnome that happens to face the garage. Trimming a hedge that does not need trimming. He has fourteen gnomes. Several have binoculars. He is six feet from the truth and absolutely committed to not confronting it. His HOA would be proud. Plainview does not have an HOA. He is one man, alone, with a clipboard.
Einstein Knows
Einstein the scarlet macaw understands the machine better than Sam does. Watch his reactions during machine scenes — he is not confused, he is frustrated. He knows exactly which valve Sam should have checked. He knows which dial is off. He communicates all of this, loudly, in clear English, from his perch. Sam does not listen. Nobody listens to the bird. The bird has never once been wrong. This makes it worse.
Jenny's Glasses Signal
Jenny's oversized colored-rim glasses are her visual signature. Glasses ON means mom mode: patient, loving, everything is fine. Glasses OFF means someone is about to have the worst five minutes of their life. When the glasses come off, the background score shifts. The kids go quiet. The dog leaves the room. Sam has learned to stop talking mid-sentence. He has not learned much else, but he has learned that.
Visual Secrets
If you paused every frame, you would still miss half of these. Somebody somewhere has already paused every frame. He is in this category.
The Fish Tank Performances
During every living room scene, a 5–6 second close-up of the fish tank appears at a random moment. Twenty fish performing famous scenes from classic plays, movies, and musicals. Full costumes. Tiny props. An octopus stage manager running lights, sound, and the orchestra with eight arms and zero breaks. Nobody in the family has ever acknowledged it. The fish do not care. The show must go on. The show has been going on for three seasons.
Sam's Steampunk Inventions
The machine is the centerpiece, but look around the garage and house for smaller steampunk contraptions performing everyday tasks with unnecessary complexity. A gear-driven coffee maker that clanks and hisses for four minutes to produce one cup. Sam watches it every morning like it is beautiful. Jenny uses the normal one. A brass catapult toaster that overshoots into the living room about thirty percent of the time. Ginger catches hers without looking up from her book. Sam cannot build anything normal. It is not in his DNA.
The Bumper Sticker
Sam's faded forest-green station wagon has quirky antennas and a bumper sticker that reads: We Travel Far And Wide. On a show about a guy who literally travels to other dimensions through his garage. The bumper sticker was on the car before he built the machine. He bought the car used. The previous owner is not answering the phone. Nobody has noticed. Nobody will.
Recurring Gags
Things that happen every single episode. You will start looking for them. You will not be able to stop. This is our fault. We accept it.
Vinny vs Laurent
The pizza rivalry between Vinny Bianchi and Chef Laurent is Plainview's favorite spectator sport. Watch for escalating passive-aggressive moves across Main Street. Menu changes that are clearly about the other person. Sidewalk chalk the night after a slow Tuesday. Suspiciously timed outdoor renovations. A sandwich board that exists solely to block a sightline. Every episode has at least one background moment. Pick your side carefully. The sides change weekly.
Hamdini's Escapes
Hamdini the hamster has escaped from the microwave, the toolbox, the glove compartment, a locked car, a locked house, and at least one sealed dimension. No cage can hold him. In every episode, watch for where Hamdini turns up. He will be somewhere impossible, wearing his tiny cape, looking completely unsurprised to be there. Jenny has stopped reacting. Sam still reacts. Hamdini does not care.
